Barrell Bourbon PX Sherry Cask Finish Review

Barrell delivers an intriguing cask strength bourbon blend combining 6-15 year old whiskeys from three states. At 57.76% ABV, this high-corn mashbill bourbon brings graphite, peaches, and a long, heated finish.

Tasting Notes:

About:
A blend of cask strength straight bourbons in a rye-balanced high corn mash bill (Corn 80%, Rye 16%, Malted Barley 4%) from bourbons made in Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee. From the label, which calls it a six-year bourbon, the mix includes: Kentucky: 9 and 10 years old, Indiana: 6, 7, 8, and 12 years old, and Tennessee: 7 and 15 years old. Seems much older than six years!
Appearance:
Refracted early sunset
Nose:
Graphite, apples, carmelized sweet potatoes; surprisingly no spiritous vapor
Palate:
Pepper at first on the tip of the tongue, canned peaches, sandalwood, candle burn, significant fire, you feel the 57.76 abv in its full percentage, then it deeps into something rich from the ice cream freezer
Finish:
The finish is long, heated, and flavorful. The bourbon isn’t finished with you for a long time. A pleasant woodiness, light as cork, slow out as the warmth trails away
Comments:
Barrell is an exciting maker of craft American whiskies, one of a small set of makers that go fearless in their ongoing search for unique ways to enjoy our old friend, whiskey.

Barrell, as always, has created a supremely interesting product. I love that we are provided with details of the mash bill and whiskey provenance. It’s as if Barrell really does consider that we are also participating in the experimentation of the “Cask Finish Series.” And, it’s probably good to take this bottle as a shared commitment to the betterment of whiskey, rather than its ultimate achievement.

Editor’s Note: This whiskey was either bought as a sample by The Whiskey Wash or provided to us as a review sample by the party behind it. Per our editorial policies, this in no way influenced the outcome of this review.
