Tasting Notes

About:

Ardbeg Wee Beastie, a five year old Scotch single malt whisky marketed as intensely peaty and a permanent expression to this Ardbeg line up. This whisky was first introduced in 2020 and has become a fan favorite for it’s approachable malty body and delectable peat smoke. Aged only five years this is considerably young for a Scotch.
Appearance:
Clear straw in color with thin and fast legs which don’t linger. Tasted in a Glencairn.
Nose:
Bright peat smoke with malt sugars. There is a soft phenolic and yeasty component to the nose as well. Some nice citrus notes and cut grass.
Palate:
The taste is rounded but sweet with a light body. The flavors are bright with soft sweetness to balance the peat smoke. Good body and complexity (for five years). White pepper, baking spices, lemon zest and touches of pine.
Finish:
Light peat smoke with soft lemon on a medium length oily finish.
Comments:
Great balance between the peat smoke and the sweet influences of the malt. The flavors grow very nicely together without becoming overly sweet. People like Ardbeg for the peat and robust, darker flavors, and this one is certainly not shy in that regard. However, it isn’t overwhelming by any stretch either. I feel there is really only so much that can be done in 5-years for a single malt, but kudos to Ardbeg for really maximizing flavor with this one.

Overall, this is clean and just a nice whisky. I hate to put a caveat again, but it’s also five years old, so don’t buy this expecting the complexity or smoothness of a 21+ whisky. However, if you’re gathering with friends or making a nice cocktail that needs a punch of peat, this is a good option. It’s available, it’s approachable, and is easily mastered by otherwise new drinkers.
