Tasting Notes

About:

Aerolite Lyndsay is one of those mysterious Islay single malts from an undisclosed distillery. This particular whisky is bottled by The Character of Islay Whisky Company. The unusual name is very much part of this 10-year-old whisky’s playful identity: an anagram of “ten year old Islay”. As is the case with other releases from undisclosed distilleries, there are ongoing debates about which distillery actually produces it.

Aerolite Lyndsay was matured in a combination of bourbon barrels and sherry quarter casks, is bottled at 46% ABV and presented without colouring or chill filtration.

Part mystery, part marketing story, and part excellent whisky, Aerolite Lyndsay has become something of a cult favourite among whisky enthusiasts who enjoy trying to guess which distillery lies behind the label.
Appearance:
Pale straw
Nose:
Classic coastal Islay notes. Gentle peat smoke and sea salt arrive first. Beneath the minerality and medicinal smoke are fresh lemons and a surprisingly creamy vanilla note. Perhaps a hint of kippers? Subtle touches of dark chocolate and leather linger in the background.
Palate:
Peat smoke and brine are balanced by sweeter notes of honey, caramel, and vanilla. There are touches of dark chocolate and a faint hint of mint. Dried apricots. Initially quite light in texture, but managed to become noticeably creamier with time in the glass.
Finish:
Medium to long, ashy and drying.
Comments:
In my view, Aerolite Lyndsay balances quality, value and intrigue very well. Its classic coastal Islay profile will appeal to peat lovers, with the palate delivering a stronger smoky presence than the nose initially suggests. It also seems reasonably priced for a 10-year-old Islay single malt.

The playful mystery surrounding its origins also makes it simply fun to talk about.
