The House of Suntory has announced the global release of Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak, a limited-edition single malt that spotlights the distillery’s century-long relationship with Spanish oak casks. The expression is crafted specifically using refill Spanish oak casks, and will roll out across 20 markets, reaching the UK on 1 November 2026.
The whisky is described as revealing the character that emerges once a Spanish oak cask is used beyond its first fill. According to the brand refill means the oak becomes gentler, allowing the vibrant red fruit associated with the wood to meet more of Yamazaki’s own bright and elegant fruit character.
Suntory links the release to the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, the appreciation of beauty as it evolves. The cask “takes on new character after the first fill, revealing a more refined, mellow and vibrant expression of Spanish oak while preserving the depth and complexity fundamental to Yamazaki,” the brand said.

Spanish oak has featured in Yamazaki’s whisky making since the distillery was founded. The Yamazaki Distillery is Japan’s first and oldest malt whisky distillery, established in 1923 by founder Shinjiro Torii.
The producer frames the new bottling within monozukuri, the Japanese pursuit of craftsmanship, and tsukuriwake, “the art of creating diversity in whisky making,” through which the distillery’s blenders cultivate a broad palette of styles.
Spanish oak remains central to the Yamazaki house style. The range, from Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve to 12, 18, and 25 Years Old, contains carefully blended components aged in American, Spanish, and Japanese Mizunara oak.

READ THE STORYThe official notes from the brand describe a color of brilliant amber. On the nose, there is stewed apricot compote baked with cloves and nutmeg. The palate offers fresh cherries with dried figs, charred peach and shaved cacao, before a finish of rich, fruit-forward coffee notes and wood smoke.
Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak will be sold across 20 markets, including the US, UK, China, Germany, Australia, France, Spain, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Canada, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, Mexico, Malaysia, Thailand, UAE, Switzerland and Sweden.
In the UK, the expression will be stocked from 1 November at select retailers including Harrods, The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop and Master of Malt. It carries a recommended retail price of £215 ($284.21, ₹27,368).
The launch follows a run of Spanish oak-focused Yamazaki releases in recent years, including the 2022 Tsukuriwake Spanish Oak Edition and the travel-retail Kogei Collection.
