Tamworth Distilling has unveiled Skeeter’s Nootkatone Flavored Whiskey, a 120-proof flavored whiskey designed to be sprayed onto cocktails to enhance aroma and brighten flavor while naturally deterring mosquitoes. The product, which the New Hampshire distillery calls a “whiskito,” launches for direct-to-consumer online purchase to 45 states on Monday, May 25, via tamworthdistilling.com, and will also be available at its on-site bottle shop in Tamworth.

At the core of Skeeter’s is nootkatone, a naturally occurring compound found in grapefruit peel. The compound is known for its crisp, citrus-forward aroma and has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a biopesticide ingredient derived from botanical sources.

“Anyone from rural New Hampshire knows that bug season, which happens from May to mid-July, is no joke — we have mosquitoes and black flies the size of pterodactyls,” said Tamworth Distilling founder Steven Grasse. “At Tamworth Distilling, we draw inspiration from the land around us — and Skeeter’s is no exception. Skeeter’s is our premium solution to a pesky problem.”

READ THE STORY

The release reflects the distillery’s ongoing experimentation with locally sourced and nature-driven ingredients. All ingredients used in production at Tamworth Distilling are farmed or foraged within 150 miles of the facility.

“What started as a moment of frustration outdoors turned into a question: how do we make the experience better without compromising the drink?” said Matt Power of Tamworth Distilling. “Skeeter’s is designed to enhance what’s already in your glass — while making sure nothing else gets in the way.”

Built on a blended whiskey base, the spirit balances a warm, woodsy foundation with lifted aromatic top notes. Official tasting notes from the brand describe fresh grapefruit leading into layers of eucalyptus, lemongrass, and soft green botanicals. Notes of very ripe citrus, coconut, fire-toasted marshmallow, and eucalyptus leaf present on the nose, settling into a steady coconut and grapefruit-like aroma with a campfire-smoke element.

The product is bottled at 120 proof and intended as a cocktail modifier rather than a standalone sipper. Tamworth Distilling suggests two to three sprays over a finished drink.

The launch continues a pattern of unconventional releases from the craft distillery, which was recognized by Food & Wine as a 2023 Drinks Innovator of the Year.
