Suntory has released its first limited edition whisky in a decade, introducing Toki Black to the U.S. market. The new expression features a smoky profile created with Hakushu Peated malt and Hakushu Grain, marking a departure from the original Toki’s lighter character.
Suntory Toki Black Brings Smoky Notes to Japanese Whisky Portfolio
The 86-proof whisky arrives at select retailers for $39.99 per 750ml bottle. According to official tasting notes, Toki Black opens with aromas of baked apple, oregano, and honeysuckle. The palate reveals butterscotch sweetness balanced by clove, cinnamon, and toasted rosemary, finishing with white pepper, ginger, and gentle smokiness.
“As our first release in a decade, Toki Black marks a significant milestone for both Toki and The House of Suntory,” said Masaki Morimoto, president of The House of Suntory. “The name ‘Toki,’ meaning ‘time,’ represents a deep part of Japanese culture—where reverence for tradition meets bold innovation. This limited-edition launch reflects that philosophy, offering a contemporary expression that honors our heritage while engaging a new generation of whisky enthusiasts.”

Music Collaboration Accompanies Suntory Toki Black Launch

Grammy-nominated producer Terrace Martin and Japanese jazz artist Jazztronik have created a special vinyl release to coincide with the whisky launch. The collaboration draws inspiration from Jazz Kissa culture and the Japanese concept of Ichigo Ichie, which emphasizes the uniqueness of each moment.
The record features two distinct sides. Side A captures a raw improvisational session between the artists, while Side B presents Martin’s contemporary reinterpretation. The musical project parallels Toki Black’s blend of traditional and innovative whisky-making techniques.
“This project was more than just making music—it was about capturing a moment that can’t be repeated,” Martin explained. “When I learned about the inspiration behind Toki Black, it immediately resonated. Ryota and I set out to blend spontaneity with intention, tradition with experimentation, and create a record that lives in the spirit of now—just like the whisky that inspired it.”
