Welsh whisky producer Penderyn Distillery has launched Icons of Wales No.13 ‘Penderyn Bad Wolf’, a special edition single malt celebrating the tenth anniversary of Bad Wolf Studios. The release marks the first collaboration between two of Wales’ most prominent contemporary exports, linking the distillery with the production company behind Doctor Who and His Dark Materials.

The partnership was revealed at the Bad Wolf Studios anniversary celebration, where Russell T. Davies unveiled the commemorative bottle. The studio takes its name from an iconic storyline in the 2005 Doctor Who revival, in which the Doctor and his companion Rose repeatedly encounter the phrase ‘Bad Wolf’ scattered across time and space.

Penderyn COO Neil Quigley attended the celebratory event alongside Bad Wolf CEO Jane Tranter and the studio’s founders.

The connection between the two companies runs through the Tregenna siblings – Jon and his sister Cath – who have family ties to both businesses.

“The ‘Bad Wolf’ release is the most exciting bottling Penderyn has ever produced,” said Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn.

“It fuses the dynamism of Welsh television with the subtle complexity of Welsh whisky, honouring both our team’s artistry and the explosive imagination of Bad Wolf Studios.”

The whisky is a 10-year-old single malt matured in Tawny Port pipes that previously held port wine for six decades.

Jane Tranter and her team personally selected the casks from Penderyn’s cellars.

Official tasting notes from the brand describe florals of orange blossom and rose petal, developing into fruitcake, fig jam and stewed dark fruits on the nose.

The palate delivers marzipan, bittersweet marmalade and sea-salt caramel, with a finish of dried apricot and gentle spice.

Master blender Aista Phillips crafted the whisky’s profile while design lead Lauren Tutssel created the bottle featuring the Bad Wolf in mid-howl.

“Great things come to those who wait,” said Jane Tranter, describing how the whisky and studio matured together over the decade.

The Icons of Wales series has previously honored figures including Bryn Terfel, Rhiannon, and Dylan Thomas.

Penderyn Bad Wolf is available online for £65 and will feature prominently in the distillery’s Christmas range at major retailers.
