Old Forester has released Prohibition Era Still Proof, the latest addition to its 117 Series, commemorating the distillery’s medicinal whiskey production during Prohibition. The limited-edition bourbon launched on December 5, coinciding with Repeal Day, and is bottled at 130 proof.
The release honors Old Forester’s unique position as one of the few distilleries legally permitted to produce whiskey for medicinal purposes during the 1920s and early 1930s.
Brown-Forman’s founding brand was among a select group of government-authorized distillers granted licenses to replenish medicinal whiskey stocks during Prohibition.

READ THE STORYThe 130-proof bottling specifically references the proof at which Old Forester was distilled during the 100-day distiller’s holiday before Prohibition’s repeal.
“This release is a tribute to the ingenuity that allowed Old Forester to endure and emerge stronger during one of the most challenging periods for American whiskey,” said Caleb Trigo, Assistant Master Distillery of Old Forester.
“This bourbon offers a glimpse into the intensity and authenticity of our Prohibition heritage.”
The timing marks the 92nd anniversary of the 21st Amendment, which ended Prohibition on December 5, 1933.
Old Forester also hosted a Repeal Day celebration at its Louisville distillery beginning at 4:30 PM EST on December 5.
The event featured hors d’oeuvres, music, and first tastings of the new expression.
Prohibition Era Still Proof will be available for $64.99 through Old Forester’s online store at shop.oldforester.com.
Online shipping is restricted to Washington D.C., Kentucky, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and North Dakota.
Select Kentucky retailers will also carry the limited-edition bourbon.
The 117 Series represents Old Forester’s premium limited releases, with previous editions exploring different aspects of the brand’s 154-year history.
Founded in 1870 by George Garvin Brown, Old Forester holds the distinction of being America’s first bottled bourbon.
