DropWorks Rum will release Distiller’s Drop #003 – American Oak Smoked Cask this October, with only 550 bottles available. The British producer, based in Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Forest, matured the rum for 29 months in American Oak, with one third of the liquid finished in Scotch whisky octave casks.

The release is the third entry in the brand’s limited-edition Distiller’s Drop series. The series explores different approaches to flavor development through casks, maturation techniques and modern British rum making.

Its inaugural release was aged in rare English chestnut casks. Distiller’s Drop #002 matured for 28 months in Bordeaux red wine casks. Both expressions won accolades at leading industry awards.

“We want to redefine what people expect from rum by making uniquely full-flavoured British rum and move beyond artificial flavourings,” said Lewis Hayes, DropWorks Rum founder and master distiller.

According to the official notes from the brand, Distiller’s Drop #003 carries flavors of golden toffee popcorn, warming spiced gingerbread and a rich smoky finish.

“That combination gives bartenders and drinkers a distinctive flavour profile that works both neat and in cocktails,” Hayes said.

Hayes credited his background behind the bar for shaping the latest expression. “My background as a bartender has played a big role in creating this one and instructed the way I think about blending rum,” he said.

“We have matured our rum in the American Oak and combined that with finished rum, so that it is taking on cherry and whisky flavour profiles,” Hayes added. “As it is quality distillate to begin with, the end product is delicious and hasn’t needed 10 years in a barrel to produce.”

The limited “Drop” accompanies the brand’s core range, which includes Barrel Drop, Clear Drop, Dark Drop, Funk Drop and Spice Drop.

DropWorks is listed at leading hospitality venues including The Ivy Brasserie, The Clove Club and Moor Hall.

DropWorks ferments, distills, ages and bottles at its site in Sherwood Forest. The distillery can produce up to 1.5 million bottles of rum a year.
