The Borders Distillery has named Giancarlo Bianchi as its new managing director, effective April 1, 2026. The appointment signals a new phase for the Hawick-based Scotch whisky producer as it prepares to expand its domestic and international footprint.

READ THE STORY“It’s a privilege to be joining The Borders Distillery at such an exciting time in its journey,” Bianchi said. “The business already has strong foundations, from production capability to brand authenticity, and there’s significant potential for growth both in the UK and internationally.”
He added: “I’m looking forward to working with the team to build on that platform, strengthen our presence in key markets and drive the brand in a sustainable way, ensuring that whisky production becomes a landmark industry in this ancient and historic region.”
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for The Borders Distillery. Established in Hawick in 2018, the distillery brought the craft of Scotch whisky making back to the Scottish Borders for the first time since 1837.
The company is currently gearing up to launch its first single malt Scotch whisky, a milestone release that will mark a significant step in its brand-building journey.
Harvinder Hungin, chairman at The Borders Distillery, said Bianchi’s background made him the right fit for the role.
“Giancarlo’s combination of operational and commercial understanding together with international distribution makes him ideally placed to lead the next phase of our development,” Hungin said. “His proven ability to transform production-led operations and grow branded sales aligns perfectly with our ambitions.”
The Borders Distillery was founded by a group of Scotch whisky industry veterans. Its facility in Hawick operates with a focus on crafting spirit that reflects the character of the Scottish Borders region. The distillery has previously released a range of blended and grain whisky expressions as it built stock ahead of its anticipated single malt launch.
Bianchi’s appointment reflects a broader trend across the Scotch whisky industry, where smaller producers are investing in experienced commercial leadership to accelerate growth in competitive global markets.
