Berry Bros. & Rudd has released a limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky from Jura Distillery, finished in a cask that previously held Domaine Tissot’s Jura Vin de Paille “Spirale” 2018. Priced at £125 with just 312 bottles available, the release bridges Scotland’s Isle of Jura with France’s Jura wine region through a single cask finish.
The whisky was finished in a 228-liter barrel sourced in 2022. The cask spent three years aging the rare, sweet French wine before being filled with the Scotch whisky.
Britain’s oldest fine wine and spirits merchant said the release represents a meeting of two regions, two traditions, and two visions of craftsmanship.
Rob Whitehead, spirits buyer at Berry Bros. & Rudd, said: “This rare limited-edition release exemplifies our commitment to pushing the boundaries. Traditional maturation, drawing on centuries of expertise to create something both unexpected and deeply rooted in provenance.”
Felix Dear, Berry Bros. & Rudd spirits curator, added: “It began, as the best ideas often do, with a question nobody thought to ask: What if we put a whisky from Jura Distillery into a cask that once held Jura Vin de Paille? Unusual? Certainly. Inspired? Without a doubt. The result of one impertinent question, two like-minded producers, and a winemaker generous enough to share his barrels.”
Jura Distillery was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell on the remote Isle of Jura, off Scotland’s west coast. The distillery closed in 1901 during a period of industry decline before being revived in 1963 to support the island’s small community. Its whiskies are known for an oily, fruity and coastal character.
The Vin de Paille “Spirale” 2018 was produced by Domaine Tissot, one of the Jura wine region’s most respected winemakers. The wine is a blend of 45% Savagnin, 45% Chardonnay, and 10% Poulsard, with a residual sugar level of 300g/l and an ABV of 9%.
Official tasting notes from the brand describe the nose as expressive, with dried apricot, fig, and chocolate layered with subtle earthy complexity. The palate offers baked apple, orange peel, and ripe peach intertwined with roasted nuts, while Jura’s signature oiliness carries through, enriched with raisin, orchard syrup, and a gentle wine-derived plushness.
Berry Bros. & Rudd has long occupied a unique position at the intersection of fine wine and spirits. The merchant’s cask-finished releases have become sought after by collectors exploring the creative potential of wine-cask maturation in Scotch whisky.
