This 11-Year-Old Kavalan Drinks Like It’s 30

Kavalan’s ability to produce profoundly mature whisky in Taiwan’s subtropical climate is no secret, but some casks still manage to completely defy expectations. The latest example to cross my desk is this single Fino sherry cask, an 11 year old bottling selected by Truth Malters for the 2025 Lunar New Year. At 57.8% ABV, it is a powerhouse, and after spending some time with it, I believe it represents a fantastic opportunity for any serious whisky lover.

On the nose, this whisky is an absolute tropical fruit dessert bomb. It explodes with notes of mango, blood orange, and sweet raisins, all underpinned by a rich layer of brown sugar and coffee cake. The wood interaction here is immense. It presents with a depth and complexity I would typically associate with a much older spirit. In fact, it immediately brought to mind some of the 30 year old Glenfarclas Family Casks I have been fortunate enough to try. It is a truly stunning aromatic profile that noses more like a classic, well aged Oloroso sherry cask than a Fino.

That richness translates perfectly to the palate. The first thing you notice is the texture. The viscosity is crazy, coating the mouth with a thick, syrupy quality and almost no alcoholic heat, which is remarkable for its strength. The flavours follow the nose with a dominant character of mango syrup, more brown sugar, and a persistent citrus note of blood orange. There is also a touch of coffee that balances the intense sweetness. With every sip, this dram seems to get better and more integrated, revealing new layers of its character.

For me, a whisky this good, at this age, and from a Fino cask is a rare find. While Kavalan has many single cask releases, they can be hit or miss. This one, however, is a certified banger. I would score it a solid 89 or 90, and it is pretty close to being backup bottle worthy, even at its price point. It is not often you can find a whisky this young that drinks with the wisdom and complexity of something three times its age. What is the most surprisingly mature whisky you have ever tried?
