Whiskey Review: Bulleit American Single Malt

Tasting Notes:

About:
Distilled from 100% malted barley, aged in charred American oak barrels, bottled at 90 proof, priced at $59.99.
Appearance:
This is a lighter golden amber in the glass, delivering structured legs and suitable viscosity.
Nose:
On the nose, rich honey notes are joined by vanilla, apricots, anise, and some pleasant hints of baked bread.
Palate:
Having tasted a lot of American single malts, the palate on this one feels too sweet. There is a heavy presence of honey, some baked bread, brown sugar, vanilla, light baking spice, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Finish:
This finishes short and sweet, with just a bit of warmth hanging in the back of the throat.
Comments:
As the American single malt landscape is still very diverse with different takes on this new whiskey style, Bulleit American Single Malt is aiming for something all its own with this flavor profile. However, I’m not a super fan of it, as I find it a little too sweet and unbalanced for my liking. It might appeal to some, however.
We review Bulleit American Single Malt, distilled from 100% malted barley and aged in charred American oak barrels.

Editor’s Note: This whiskey was provided to us as a review sample by the party behind it. Per our editorial policies, this in no way influenced the outcome of this review.

The as of yet, still not officially approved by the TTB American whiskey category known as American Single Malt has been growing by leaps and bounds in recent years in terms of new distilleries/brands and related bottlings. It has, to date, been the playground of small to mid-size distilleries across the country. However, this has been changing lately, with big brands like Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam getting in on the action.

A more recent entry on the big brand side into this space is Bulleit with its new Bulleit American Single Malt, which is being reviewed today. Distilled from a mash bill of 100% malted barley, it is an unknown where it was distilled. According to Bulleit PR,

Bulleit American Single Malt was distilled by 1 distillery in Kentucky.

Due to contractual obligations with our supply partners, we cannot share specific details, but as has always been the case, we work very closely with our distilling partners to ensure that Bulleit is made to our exacting standards and specifications.

For further detail, we factor in working in partnerships with local distilleries to meet the growing demand for our whiskey that cannot be serviced by production at our distilleries in Shelbyville, KY or Lebanon, KY. Our distillers work closely with our distilling partners to ensure that Bulleit whiskey is made to our exacting standards and specifications.

When we were first exploring Bulleit American Single Malt, the Lebanon, KY distillery was not operational and our Shelbyville, KY distillery was just getting started producing our signature Bulleit Bourbon at full capacity so we looked to an outside contractor to distill this product to our exacting specifications.

We look forward to distilling and aging Bulleit American Single Malt at one of our world class facilities in the near future.

So there you have it. For other details, the single malt is aged in charred American oak barrels. No specific age statement was given, and it was bottled at 90 proof.

For those interested in the environmental side of things, it should be noted this whiskey is housed “in a bottle made from post-consumer recycled glass and distinctive green hue” that’s due to its recycled glass content, according to the brand.

“Bulleit American Single Malt brings Bulleit’s restless innovation and passion for sustainability into this exciting new category that is set to make waves in the whiskey industry for years to come,” said Jesse Damashek, Senior Vice President of Whiskies & Liqueurs at Diageo at the time of its release. “With a 100% malted barley mash bill, and a striking green bottle created from post consumer recycled glass, this exceptional whiskey covers a lot of new ground for the brand.

“I believe we’ve succeeded in crafting a distinctive American Single Malt that whiskey lovers across the country will savor and enjoy.”

Bulleit American Single Malt is priced at $59.99 and is available nationwide.
