Tasting Notes

About:

Released in the 1980s, this Macallan ‘As We Get It’ expression is an independently released non-age statement cask strength bottling. The ‘As We Get It’ brand name has been held by a number of different independent bottlers over the years, with each expression bottled from the cask in small quantities ensuring each bottling is unique varying in flavour, colour and strength. This edition was bottled at 59% ABV.

Appearance:
Bright Copper
Nose:
Very floral carnations, alongside cut grass and cedarwood. Gives way to strong aromas of beeswax furniture polish with a hint of leather, giving way to sweet caramel and honey.
Palate:
Surprisingly spicy, with a range of cinnamon, clove, pepper, nutmeg, and carraway seeds. The spices give way a mix of woody, but slightly earthy notes, with notes of cedarwood and leather. Sweet chocolate develops, with a hit of ginger.
Finish:
Long and very warming, a combination of oaky spice, white pepper, and nutmeg linger. A hint of caramel sweetness at the close.
Comments:
Wow, this ‘As We Get It’ expression is a surprisingly spicy Macallan, which contrasts considerably with the brand’s modern core range. A complex and well layered whisky balancing spices, wood, and sweet chocolate and caramel notes. I especially liked the woody and earthy notes on the palate.

Given Macallan’s preference for sherry cask maturation, I’d guess this expression was matured in a refill sherry cask, as there’s really only minimal sherry influence. An excellent example of an independently bottled cask strength Macallan – Very drinkable!
