Whiskey Review: Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey

Tasting Notes:

About:
114 Proof (57% ABV), aged for 7 years, charcoal filtered, 750ml bottle, MSRP $79.99.
Appearance:
This rye whiskey has a lovely dark reddish color.
Nose:
There is definitely a lovely hint of oak and a smoky tobacco touch.
Palate:
There is a lovely hit of what seems like a spiced honey that first hits your tongue. This is followed by a sweet touch of vanilla and caramel, followed up with a spiced tobacco hint.
Finish:
Comments:
This is a surprising rye whiskey. One may not even realize they are drinking a rye, as it has such a sweetness and mellowness not generally expected in a rye whiskey. Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey can easily be consumed neat, or even on the rocks, and be lovely just on it’s own.

Ezra Brooks whiskey has been around for over 50 years, and is a well established brand. Currently owned by Luxco Brands, as its origin story goes it is said to have been created by one Frank Silverman in 1957, and was bottled at the Hoffman Distilling Company, in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, up until Hoffman went out of business in the 1970s.

In 1993, the Ezra Brooks brand was purchased by the David Sherman Corporation, which is now Luxco. In 2018, it found a new home in Bardstown at Lux Row Distillers, and today it sits alongside other Lux Row whiskeys such as Rebel Bourbon, David Nicholson, and Blood Oath.

One of Ezra Brooks’ latest installments is Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey. Obviously aged at 7 years, and a mix of two rye mashbills, one at 51% rye whiskey and one at 95% rye whiskey. This rye whiskey is currently a limited allocation of 18,000 750ml bottles, at an MSRP of $79.99.

The introduction of Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey last year came on the heels of Old Ezra 7-Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey’s “Best Overall Bourbon” win at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Like its bourbon namesake, Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey features a high-end, custom-designed bottle. Its green, jewel-toned label is highlighted by a 7-year age statement and gold and copper foil accents.
