Whiskey Review: Fortune’s Fool The Prelude Straight Rye Whiskey

Tasting Notes:

About:
Distilled from a mash bill of 62% rye, 30% corn, and 8% barley; aged 32 months in American oak barrels from Seguin Moreau Cooperage; bottled at 109.6 proof; priced at $55.
Appearance:
Warm, rich amber-golden colors dance in the glass, showcasing solid whiskey legs and nice viscosity.
Nose:
There’s a nice hit of spicy pepper right away, opening up into pleasant notes of sweet corn, vanilla, a touch of tobacco, bread pudding and an ending hint of cloves.
Palate:
This plays nice on my tongue, giving me happily mixed flavors of black pepper, vanilla, creme brulee, pumpkin pie, blueberries, baking spices, and baked pear.
Finish:
It is soft and peppery as it goes down, bringing a little bit of heat and lingering a little shorter than I would hope for after such a robust start.
Comments:
Fortune’s Fool The Prelude Straight Rye Whiskey is a solid first offering from this young whiskey brand. Flavors are well-balanced and very pleasurable. I look forward to seeing what’s next.

Fortune’s Fool, a new woman-focused whiskey producer, first emerged on the scene back in 2019. Founded by Juliet Schmalz, MD, a former anesthesiologist turned whiskey producer, she was trained in whiskey production in Kentucky and works alongside noted female master blender Eboni Major to create spirits for her brand.

The first of these whiskeys, Fortune’s Fool The Prelude Straight Rye Whiskey, is the focus of what I’m reviewing here today. This expression, distilled from a mash bill of 62% rye, 30% corn, and 8% barley, was aged in Kentucky in what’s described as “wine-grade barrels” sourced from Seguin Moreau Cooperage in Napa Valley, California.

These barrels, made from American oak, were crafted from wood staves seasoned for 24 months in open-air yards and then charred and toasted over oak fires.

The Prelude Straight Rye Whiskey, released late last year, is a ten-barrel blend aged 32 months in these Seguin barrels before being bottled at a barrel strength of 109.6 proof. It costs $55 and is available in-stores and select bars and restaurants across Indiana, as well as for online purchase.
