Blue Run Spirits Double Oak Single Barrel Rye review

Tasting Notes

About:

Double oaked, single barrel rye; No age statement; 106.2 proof. SRP: 199.99.
Appearance:
Honey.
Nose:
Lovely oak, slight aromas of berry jam, hints of orange peel. I also got a little bit of char as if from a well bbq’d steak.
Palate:
Nice blend of oak and sweetness. Little burn at the end, very pleasant, as if to say I am still here! I also get a little bit of dark chocolate covered candied orange peel. Mint spiciness comes in towards the end as well and lingers on.

Comments:
This is a lovely rye whiskey for a whiskey enthusiast. The marriage of char and rye really elevates this to a very pleasant experience. The burn from the higher proof is perfectly balanced. Just when you think the lovely sweet first taste is going away, you then get the orange chocolate mixed with oak and then followed by the slight burn with some mint notes (but in small dose).rnrnI really like it. It is deceiving for the first few seconds thinking you will be getting just one dimension and then it amps it up a bit. I think this would be a great addition to a collection and since the rye is quite well tempered and balanced with the sweetness, those who are not big fans of rye but like bourbon will also enjoy this one.
