Sovereign Brands’ Scotch ‘The Deacon’ Launches With Pernod Ricard Collaboration

Sovereign Brands’ recent first foray into whisky is a new blended Scotch called The Deacon, made from hand-selected whiskies from Scotland’s Islay and Speyside regions.

A statement from the Sovereign noted that this venture into whisky is in collaboration with spirits giant Pernod Ricard.

The blenders took single malts from Islay to give The Deacon its peaty smoke flavor, while single malts from the mainland give the Scotch its bonfire-like smoky character.

The tasting notes show the result is a smoky, sweet, and peaty flavor with a long and smooth finish. Charred orange, sweet malty biscuits and woodsmoke on the nose give way to juicy orange, spice and tangy peat flavors.

The final bottling strength is 40% ABV.

The Deacon comes in an embossed bottle, reminiscent of the traditional copper pot stills used in the distillation process. The label features a masked character, and the title “Deacon” refers to an adept and proficient master tradesman.

“We’re not competing. We’re innovating,” said Brett Berish, CEO and and co-founder of Sovereign Brands. “We’ve moved away from traditional labeling and bottle design with a metallic copper package and an unorthodox label. Most importantly, this is the most well-balanced, complex but drinkable taste profile.”

The Deacon has a suggested retail price of $39.99.
