New Star Trek Spirit Boldly Goes Where Rye Whiskey Hasn’t Gone Before

Ever since its first appearance in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Romulan Ale became a staple of bars across the galaxy. But art has become real life, as upstart Star Trek Spirits has released a Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey.

In the Star Trek universe, Romulan Ale is known as a highly-potent beverage of Romulan origin with its characteristic crystal blue color. The Romulan drink was declared Illegal by the Federation in early 2280.

Even as the Federation attempted to abolish It, Romulan Ale remained a popular and sought-after spirit, standing the test of time.

Star Trek Spirits’ new release is literally years in the making, and the limited edition, individually numbered bottles of Romulan Ale Rye are available now.

A social media post from the spirits company noted that the rye whiskey used in Romulan Ale Rye was designed from start to finish to be steeped in history and technology.

The whiskey makers started with ultra-premium rye whiskey, a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. They were seeking a sweetness and flavor complexity after the spirit aged in newly-charred white oak barrels.

Next, the distillers used a 150-year-old yeast strain, found in several well-known rye whiskeys, then took it a step further with a second distilling process.

In collaboration with food scientists, the distillers used a technological vacuum distillation process. Distillation under vacuum creates lower temperatures, enhancing both flavor and aromatics.

The Romulan Ale Rye then aged more than two years just across the Ohio River from Kentucky.

The distiller’s notes show that the rye graininess is apparent in the nose and initial taste on the tongue, followed by a sweet note of vanilla creaminess and sweetness. It has the spicy, peppery rye finish with muted notes of dried fig, raisin and cherry.

The Star Trek Spirits Romulan Ale Rye has a suggested retail price of $85 and is available now at www.startrekspirits.com
