White Peak Distillery Unveils A “Distillery Refill” English Whisky

The UK’s White Peak Distillery recently launched its first 2023 release of Wire Works Whisky, a year after the single malt English whisky first debuted.

A statement from White Peak explained that this new expression, called Caduro, is named for a global cable brand that was once made by Johnson & Nephew at the former Wire Works, the home of White Peak Distillery since 2016.

The heritage and provenance of the local town, Derbyshire, are at the heart of every aspect of White Peak Distillery and its craft spirits, and the distiller noted that Caduro is an extension of this strong sense of place.

According to the distiller, Caduro is a vatting of Derbyshire single malt whisky matured in a combination of American and French oak, both first fill ex-bourbon barrels, as well as White Peak’s signature STR casks (reconditioned wine barriques that have been shaved, toasted and re-charred).

The selection of STR casks, and proportion of French oak used for Caduro are different from previous releases, the distiller’s notes show, which helps add extra fruit depth and intensity to the lightly-peated spirit.

The whisky clocks in at 46.8% ABV with nothing added during the process and no chill-filtration.

Interestingly, Caduro will also be the first Wire Works Whisky release to be offered as a “distillery refill,” a “bottle for life” concept. Visitors to the distillery who bring their empty Caduro bottle back to the distillery’s shop will get a 15% refill discount as well.

The distiller’s notes describe Caduro as a complex, approachable single malt whisky that’s lightly peated. It features green apple, banana and candy cane on the nose, with citrus zest, cereal and tobacco on the palate. The finish is warm and spicy with hint of smoke.

White Peak Distillery was founded by husband-and-wife team Max and Claire Vaughan, both originally from Derbyshire. In the past year, the distillery has won awards for its whisky as well as its distillery visitor experiences and Wire Works Whisky packaging.

“Off the back of an amazing 2022 for Wire Works Whisky, and having sold out of last month’s Double Oak Port release, we are excited to now be sharing our first main release of 2023,” said Max Vaughan, co-founder of White Peak. “Over the past year, we have been overwhelmed by the response we’ve had from our various communities, sector partners and friends who have supported us, bought our whiskies and visited us here at the distillery.”

He said the launch of Caduro marks a milestone for them a year on from their first release, both as a development towards a benchmark core whisky, and with a name that is grounded in the passion and connection they feel for their home and rich heritage at the Wire Works.

Caduro is now available via the distillery’s shop and online, as well as from Booths, Master of Malt, The Whisky Exchange, and select UK retailers. It has a suggested retail price of £60 per bottle.
