You Can Now Pay Your Glengoyne Dram With Time, Not Money

Glengoyne Highland Single Malt will offer whisky enthusiasts in the UK a chance to get a bottle of their product for free. How can this be? You can get a dram by donating your time, rather than paying with money.

A recent statement from Glengoyne notes that consumers will be asked to pledge one volunteering day with the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, a long-time charity partner, and those selected will carry out a crucial wetland-sustaining activity at one of WWT’s UK sites.

As thanks for their carbon-capturing efforts, participants will receive a bottle of the Highland distiller’s new 15 Year Old Single Malt and a personal invite to visit Glengoyne for an in-depth tour.

Glengoyne officials said the volunteering activity helps maintain crucial wetlands sites across the UK, including coppicing trees, clearing vegetation, and removing invasive plant species to create unique biodiverse wetland habitats.

Information provided by the WWT explains that wetlands clean water, reduce the risk of flooding, and boost biodiversity. More than 40 percent of the world’s species rely on wetlands for survival and coastal wetlands like saltmarsh are proven to sequester more carbon more quickly than native woodland.

The WWT looks to restore and create 100,000 hectares of healthy wetlands across the UK as part of their plans for a “Blue Recovery” for nature.

Glengoyne adopted a wetlands facility for 100 percent of its liquid waste back in 2011. This helped the distillery reduce waste by 25 percent, their statement explained, and provides a home to 14,500 plants and abundant wildlife, fostering biodiversity and encouraging wildlife in the local area.

Katy Muggeridge, brand director at Ian Macleod Distillers, said the environment is at the heart of everything they do, and their 11-year partnership with WWT is testament to this.

“In launching the 15 Year Old, we wanted to give back to the beautiful ecosystem that allows us to produce our single malt,” she added. “So, by donating just one day of your time to WWT, whisky fans will be able to help protect carbon-capturing wetlands, aid the conservation of migratory geese, and take home a bottle of this excellent new dram.”

Georgie Cox, corporate partnerships manager at the WWT, said Glengoyne shows constant vocal support for the importance of wetlands, and, thanks to this support, they’ve been able to show how much these green spaces can do for people and the planet in the fight against climate change.

“We’re proud to call them our partners and are excited to turn whisky enthusiasts into wetland enthusiasts as well,” she added.

The distiller’s notes show the new Glengoyne 15 Year Old features contrast and harmony through the marriage of its sherry and bourbon casks, which delivers sweet, dark orchard fruits from the former and oaky spice and vanilla from the latter.

The whisky has a light amber hue and a bouquet of flavors as the nose is of malt flour, fresh hay, dried fruits, citrus and rosehip. The palate has a hint of tropical fruit, with tastes of cinnamon, vanilla, and apple like that of a baked apple pie. A dry finish features gentle spice and lingering oak.

The 15 Year Old is bottled at 43% ABV, and is available to buy direct from the whisky maker’s website for £90, as well as at specialist retailers.
