The new Wolfburn 2023 Anniversary Series, according to those behind it, kicks off a new collector’s edition that will be released annually on Burns Night, with 2023 being the first. Wolfburn’s first ever distillation took place on January 25th, 2013.

For this particular whisky, the distillery has chosen cask number 691, a single cask expression yielding just 680 bottles. Matured for over nine years in an ex-Oloroso sherry butt, this cask had previously been used for finishing, but never for full maturation.

“Looking back,” noted the distillery team in an email to its followers, the growth of Wolfburn has been a truly joyous journey. Our aims were always simple: to make the best possible spirit, matured in the best available casks and then leave it to mother nature to do the rest. Hard work and time has paid off and the whisky is better than our wildest dreams.

“From our first foray into the international markets the growth of Wolfburn has been simply stellar, with a plethora of gold-medal wins in major international spirits competitions our whisky is now appreciated and enjoyed globally. The last decade seems to have vanished in a blur, but it’s a blur in which we’ve gained fans, followers and friends all around the world – and it’s this that’s Wolfburn’s biggest accolade.”

Official tasting notes are below for this 52.3% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural color offering, which prices £90 per 700 ml bottle. It is available directly from Wolfburn.

  • Nose: There’s heat, as expected with a whisky of this strength, but it’s soft with no burn. Beautiful sweet tones shine through with the promise of a very rich dram indeed.
  • Palate: Only sherry-matured whiskies lend themselves to a creaminess like this. The sweetness and depth of flavour is an absolutely joy. Autumn fruits mingle with golden syrup and treacle, while soft floral notes overlay the whole.
  • Finish: The dram gets sweeter over time and unsurprisingly it’s the Oloroso tones that linger to the very end.  A truly excellent dram, and a lovely testament to a decade of hard work by Wolfburn’s master distillers.
