The Famous Grouse Mellow Gold Goes Heavy On The Sherry

Famous Grouse Mellow GoldThe popular The Famous Grouse blended Scotch whisky brand is out with a new expression starting this month aimed for those who like their drink a little mellower. Known as The Famous Grouse Mellow Gold, this latest bottling is set to price around £22, or about $35 USD.

The Famous Grouse Mellow Gold, bottled at 40% ABV, is made with a blend of whiskies including those from bourbon and sherry casks. It is not uncommon to see the use of these types of aging barrels in a Scotch blend, but what particularly stands out for this whisky, at least according to those behind it, is the use of a “touch more sherry casks than usual” to mellow out the Scotch.

“The effect is a smooth, well rounded whisky with added complexity of vanilla and subtly-sweet spice to create a gentle, velvety dram. Mellow Gold is a delicious achievement,” said Gordon Motion, master blender at The Famous Grouse, in a statement, “and a subtle, smooth indulgence to be savoured.”

Mellow Gold is said to be “part of an ambitious redevelopment plan that will bring significant changes to The Famous Grouse range.” Another change in the works, which will be unveiled later this year, looks to be making some modifications to the smoky The Black Grouse bottling.
