Smokehead Releases Islay Scotch Finished In Tequila Casks

Smokehead Whisky recently launched a unique new expression, an Islay Single Malt finished in tequila casks.

Tequila Cask Terminado is what they’re calling it, as it was made by maturing Smokehead’s Islay Single Malt Whisky in an ex-bourbon barrel then finishing it in a Mexican tequila oak cask.

A statement from the distiller explained the tequila finishing gave the single malt notes of smooth toffee, with lime and ambrosian peaches. The finish is long and sweet with heat.

The uniqueness of the tequila cask finish shows that the marriage of peat and wild agave lends a spiciness to the spirit. Smoke mixes with chewy meringue tastes, and hints of blood orange with barbecued pineapple on the palate.

To celebrate the launch, Smokehead created a video called Taste The Afterlife to offer more info about the lively spirit. It’s a song and dance of the dead, featuring two skeletons rising from the dead for a last tango in a tequila cask. Moving to the beat of modern Latin music, the routine celebrates the coming together of Scottish and Mexican cultures.

The new Terminado expression joins Rum Cask Rebel, Sherry Cask Blast, and Twisted Stout in Smokehead’s portfolio.

“Smokehead is a brand that constantly pushes the boundaries of what a single malt whisky is, and how it’s perceived,” said Iain Weir, Smokehead’s brand director. “By embracing contemporary methods of finishing, we’re at the forefront of innovation, both as a brand and within the industry at large. All for the benefit of our valued customers.”

Tequila Cask Terminado (70ml) is available in the UK exclusively through Amazon and at www.smokehead.com. It has a suggested retail price of £68.99.
