Loch Lomond’s New Single Malt Steam & Fire From Heavily Charred Casks

Loch Lomond recently added to its portfolio of whiskies with the launch of Steam & Fire.

A statement from the whisky maker noted this single malt is finished in heavily charred American oak casks, which were flamed at Loch Lomond Whiskies’ own traditional cooperage.

Officials with Loch Lomond said this is an entirely new concept for the distiller and this whisky has been crafted to showcase the brand’s distillation and maturation skills.

Steam & Fire takes its inspiration from the distillery itself, located near the banks of the Loch Lomond. The distillery features an impressive set of straight neck pot stills, unique to Loch Lomond, and Master Blender Michael Henry points to them as an influence of flavor at the point of distillation, as well as during maturation.

Steam & Fire begins its journey being distilled in a combination of straight neck and traditional swan neck pot stills before maturing in first-fill bourbon barrels and refill American oak casks.

The single malt is then finished in heavily charred American oak casks for 10 months, which the distiller noted gives a rich demerara sugar influence on the whisky. In turn, this creates a flavor profile characterized by notes of orange, pear and melted brown sugar with a dark chocolate, and a soft smoke finish.

Steam and Fire’s packaging comes in colors of blue and red, to reflect the brand’s colors and cooperage.

This new release garnered Loch Lomond the title of “most awarded distillery” at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

“Steam & Fire is unlike anything we have created at our distillery before,” Master Blender Henry said. “Intended to capture our extensive and unique capabilities in whisky making, it is a striking expression which speaks to the heart of what Loch Lomond Whiskies is trying to achieve and our ongoing experimentation with flavor.”

Steam & Fire is now available and has a suggested retail price of £45. You can find it at specialist retailers, as well as directly from www.lochlomondwhiskies.co.uk.
