Glenglassaugh Distillery recently announced a limited release of its 46-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch, which they are making available exclusively to the U.S. market.

A statement from the Scottish distiller notes that this complex single malt was distilled in 1975, and it’s one of the oldest and rarest expressions from the Highland’s Glenglassaugh Distillery, which was shuttered for more than 20 years before its reboot in 2008.

This highly limited whisky matured 46 years in a single bourbon cask hand-selected by Master Blender Rachel Barrie. She explained that each bottle has been individually hand-numbered to reflect its rarity and sealed with wax.

Glenglassaugh 46 was inspired by the distillery’s coastal location on the white sandy beach of Sandend Bay on the Highland coast of Scotland. Barrie said it’s a whisky shaped by land and sea, presenting notes of tropical and summer fruit on an ocean breeze.

“It’s impossible to separate Glenglassaugh the whisky from Glenglassaugh the place,” Barrie said. “The lush sweetness of this coastal single malt is a complete distillation of its natural surroundings. Its whole essence is created by both the visible and invisible influences of land, sea, air and spring water.”

Her notes described the 46-Year-Old as having aromas of mango, plum, cherry and black currant with oak and red grape along with ambergris. On the palate, it has flavors of tropical fruit, cherry, black currant and mango on a breeze of cooling menthol and grapefruit.

Glenglassaugh 46 clocks in at 41.7% ABV, and comes non-chill filtered and naturally colored. It will be available at select retail locations in the U.S. Each individual bottle is sealed with wax and numbered by hand, and has a suggested retail price of $4,800.
