Now in its second decade since it was brought back to life, Scotland’s Glenglassaugh Distillery is presenting a new portfolio and design direction.
In a statement from the distiller, their release of a flagship 12 Year Old Single Malt embodies Glenglassaugh’s signature coastal style, and it’s the shining example of their new direction.
The reimagined portfolio and design was shaped by the influences of land and sea, the whisky maker notes, and the new whisky matured in the distillery’s coastal warehouses overlooking the surf of Sandend Bay on Scotland’s northeast coast.
Rachel Barrie, Glenglassaugh master blender, said, “The new portfolio brings together all the key elements of Glenglassaugh’s spirit. Inspired by its truly unique coastal location, the new expressions transport us to a place where the spirit is awakened and soul invigorated, inviting us to stop, take a breath and appreciate our surroundings.”
She explained that two other new whiskies, Sandend and Portsoy, go on to explore the coastal elements of Glenglassaugh.
Sandend is inspired by the crescent beach of Sandend Bay, and is matured in bourbon, Sherry and Manzanilla casks. Barrie said this brings a tropical sweetness with a touch of sea-salt.
Portsoy takes its name from the neighboring harbor village, and reflects the maritime flavor of the peated single malt, matured in Sherry, bourbon and Port casks.
To celebrate the new direction, Glenglassaugh partnered with landscape photographer Richard Gaston to launch a photography series that will capture the distillery’s connection to the land and sea.

And later this year, the statement noted, the portfolio will add a number of releases dating back to the ‘60s and ‘70s, honoring Glenglassaugh’s heritage expressions from a time that helped to shape the Highland coastal malt.
Glenglassaugh 12 Years Old

- Nose: Soft buttery vanilla ice cream with tropical fruit, chocolate, and a touch of sea salt.
- Taste: Waves of salted caramel with a burst of pineapple, cherry and grapefruit, notes of the ocean shore.
- ABV: 50.5%

Portsoy
- Color: Deep amber
- Nose: Maritime waves infused with tropical fruit and sherried dark soy, port with licorice and sea kelp.
- Taste: Full-bodied with dark chocolate, fermented soy and charred mango with treacle and a hint of sea salt.
- ABV: 49.1%
