Glenfiddich Adds A 12 Year Sherry Cask Finished Scotch

Glenfiddich announced it recently had enlarged its Core range with the addition of a new expression – a 12 year old Scotch single malt whisky finished in sherry casks.

The new Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old Sherry Cask Finish, according to those behind it, was initially matured for 12 years in traditional American and European Oak casks before finishing in rare Amontillado sherry casks. Amontillado is a specific sherry type from the Spanish sherry region of Jerez that is characterized as being darker than Fino and lighter than Oloroso. Amontillado is considered to be one of the four major dry sherries but still displays sweet notes like hazelnut and caramel.

Amontillado sherry casks produced for the whisky industry are known to be extremely rare, representing only 1.8% of all sherry produced.

“The core character of Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old Sherry Cask Finish remains true to the heart of our signature Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old with a sweet, fruitiness rich in fresh pear and crisp apple,” said Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman in a prepared statement. “The flavor is deeper, sweeter, and oakier with light spice, delicate hints of dried fruits, and a touch of baked apple.”

Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old Sherry Cask Finish is now available across California and Florida at a suggested retail price of around $55 per 750 ml bottle. Official tasting notes from the distillery are below for this 43% ABV expression.

  • Nose: Distinctively fresh and fruity with a hint of pear, delicate fruits and subtle spice
  • Taste: Beautifully sweet, fruity notes enveloped by rich oak, cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of baked apple
  • Finish:  Smooth and mellow with a lingering spiciness
