Benromach’s Latest Whisky Puts A Twist In Its Subtle Smoky Profile

Speyside’s Benromach Distillery recently launched a limited edition single malt, Benromach Cara Gold, that will see just 6,000 bottles available globally.

A press release from Benromach states that this is the first time the distillery has used Cara Gold malted barley, a low color roasted caramel malt more commonly found in breweries which produces rich fruity and toffee flavors.

This was combined with the distillery’s standard lightly peated malt to create what’s described as a unique expression that looks to offer a new twist on the subtle smokiness Benromach is known for.

Laid down in 2010 before being bottled in 2022, this whisky is natural in color and non-chill filtered. The distiller’s notes state that it’s been matured exclusively in first-fill bourbon barrels, creating passionfruit, lychee and lime aromas complemented by a hint of malted biscuit. With sweet flavors of pineapple, apricot and a subtle pepperiness, it leads to a vibrant, fruity and sweet smoke finish.

Keith Cruickshank, Benromach’s distillery manager, said in a prepared statement they love to get creative with their small batch vintage expressions and this Contrasts range allows them to do that.

“Unlike any of our other expressions, we have used Cara Gold malt – this is a type of malted barley you would usually find in a brewery rather than a distillery and it has produced a beautiful and unique single malt,” he added. “But, in true Benromach style, this whisky was made by hand for genuine character using the skills, expertise and senses of our small team of distillers.”

Benromach Cara Gold is available at selected retailers worldwide for a suggested retail price of £49.99.
