Benromach Unveils a 19-Year-Old Scotch For Its 20th Anniversary

The Benromach distillery in Scotland was originally built in 1898, eventually being purchased by its current owners in 1993. It was extensively re-equipped over a five-year period before opening once again in 1998. Now, some two decades later, it is celebrating this re-opening with a 19-year-old whisky bottling.

The Benromach 20th Anniversary Bottling, according to those behind it, was distilled in the first year of production since it reopened. The Scotch was matured in first fill oak casks in the traditional dunnage warehouses at the distillery in Forres, Scotland, before being bottled at 56.2% ABV.

“When we began distilling again in 1998,” said Keith Cruickshank, Distillery Manager at Benromach, in a prepared statement, “we wanted to recreate the unique Speyside whisky taste which historically had a touch of smoke. The 20th Anniversary Bottling uses the finest ingredients to create a gorgeous whisky that has exceptional depth and smoothness. This new expression gives Benromach lovers around the world the chance to own and taste a moment in time from the distillery’s rich history.”

Plans call for around 3,000 bottles of this 20th anniversary bottling to be released, priced at £299, or a little over $400 USD. The bottle comes housed in a lined wooden box. It also features copper detailing, reminiscent of the distillery’s two gleaming copper pot stills. A hardback book accompanies the whisky and celebrates the traditions that are employed in crafting the Scotch.

As far as official tasting notes go, it is noted by Benromach this whisky “has an exceptional vintage character, with rich fruits, fresh citrus and charred oak with subtle spice and a light touch of smoke on the finish.”
