Arran’s Lagg Distillery Debuts Its First Core Range Single Malt

Scotland’s Lagg Distillery, found on the Isle of Arran, recently launched the brand’s first core range single malt, this after their inaugural batch releases in the fall of 2022.

A statement from the independent distiller noted that the Lagg Single Malt Kilmory Edition will become their flagship single malt, which highlights Lagg’s focus on producing a peated single malt reminiscent of the style of whisky originally made in illicit stills on the island decades ago.

The Kilmory Edition is fully matured in first-fill bourbon barrels. It’s bottled without chill filtration and no added color, and clocks in at 46% ABV.

The distiller’s notes show that the influence of the peat combined with the vanilla and creamy influence of the American oak forms the backbone of the single malt.

Lagg Distillery Manager Graham Omand said that The Kilmory expression embodies the house style of Lagg, which centers around the use of bourbon barrels along with their peated spirit.

The expression’s name, Kilmory, comes from the name of the parish where the small village of Lagg resides.

Following The Kilmory Edition, the distiller noted, will be the second core range expression from Lagg, The Corriecravie Edition. It will be released at the end of July.

The Corriecravie Edition is first matured in bourbon barrels, then finished six months in Oloroso Sherry hogsheads that come from Miguel Martin in Jerez, Spain. This whisky clocks in at 55% ABV.

“The Corriecravie provides a real contrast, showing off a different side to the Lagg spirit, bringing to the fore notes of sweeter smoke, spices and rich fruits,” he said. “These single malts are really rooted in the southside of Arran and their aromatic, peated character embodies the earthiness of the whiskies that would have been among the first to have been distilled on Arran hundreds of years ago.”

Corriecravie is also named for a small hamlet, one just to the northwest of the village of Lagg.

The Kilmory Edition is available now, with a suggested price of £49.99. The Corriecravie Edition will be available late in July for a price of £64.99. Both editions will be available to purchase at specialist whisky retailers, the Lagg Distillery itself, and at www.arranwhisky.com/shop-whiskies.
