The Isle of Arran distillery in Scotland, which earlier this year unveiled one of its oldest whiskies to date, is back again with word of two new expressions that bring a more peaty side to its profile. One is the fifth iteration of a popular bottling, and the other is a cask strength version of the same release.
The new offerings in the Machrie Moor peated whisky collection draw their name from “the legend of a warrior giant who tethered his dog to a stone in a mystical peat bog called Machrie Moor which lies on the west coast of the Isle of Arran.” Both are meant to be limited edition bottlings, and are being made available in worldwide markets this month.
According to the distillery the fifth edition of Machrie Moor, which prices around $70, is bottled at 58.4% and “has hints of vanilla, fresh pineapple and citrus, with an extra punch of peat smokiness on the finish.” The cask strength release, meanwhile, “has distinct influence of peat and notes of fresh pineapple and a caramelised bourbon cask vanilla finish.” It is priced at around $80.
Only 12,000 bottles of Machrie Moor Fifth Edition and just 6,000 bottles of the first edition cask strength Machrie Moor will be available.
