As we’ve mentioned in the past, flavored whiskey is one of the strongest growth categories in whiskey. Since the first honey whiskey was released by Wild Turkey in the 1970s, honey-flavored whiskey has been at the forefront of this ever-growing trend.
Now, some of the biggest whiskeys in the world have honey-flavored variants, including Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam.
Over the last decade, there has been almost a 900% increase in the volume of flavored whiskeys and there seems to be no stopping the growth and demand. With the market trends, there are many that are looking to make their mark in this hot category. One of those producers is Luxco, who owns Celtic Honey.
Celtic Honey was originally a cordial, made at 60 proof (30% abv), which is a little under the proof needed to be considered a whiskey according to many regulations around the world. Luxco has now made Celtic Honey Beekeeper’s Blend into a flavored whiskey, bringing the proof up from 60 to 80.
Celtic Honey Beekeeper’s Blend may have changed the category that it was originally in, but it hasn’t changed the process and story behind the creation. The whiskey is still made in Northern Ireland and comes from a tradition of Irish meads. It is a blend of Irish whiskey, Irish honey, herbs, and floral spices often associated with traditional Irish meads and floral beers.
