Walsh Whiskey Unveils Cognac Cask Finished Irish Whiskey

Walsh Whiskey’s Writers’ Tears Irish Whiskey range recently unveiled a new, super-premium expression, Writers’ Tears Copper Pot – Deau XO Cognac Cask Finish. This fourth addition to the Writers’ Tears lineup is, like its predecessors, a blend of single malt and single pot still whiskeys. In its particular case though it has been finished for 9 months in 12 ex-French oak casks that have been seasoned for 10 to 15 years with Deau XO Cognac.

“Everything about this expression comes from the highest quality inputs, from our own unique blend of triple-distilled Single Malt and aged Single Pot Still whiskeys, to the finish in French (Limousin) Oak casks from the renowned family cooperage of Allary that have been seasoned by the Legaret family’s Deau XO Cognac for between 10 to 15 years,” said Walsh founder Bernard Walsh in a prepared statement. “”Everything builds to a special experience that we are very proud to put our own family name to and are delighted to share with fans of the Writers’ Tears portfolio, as well as those who might be trying a Writers’ Tears expression for the very first time.”

Walsh is part of a recent boom in Irish whiskey, opening a huge (by Irish standards) new distillery several years ago with a yearly capacity of 650,000 cases.

This new Cognac cask finished Irish whiskey is triple distilled and bottled at 46% ABV. Plans call for it to be available in the US, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, France, and the UK for a suggested retail price of €74.99, or around $85 USD.

The official tasting notes for Writers’ Tears Copper Pot – Deau XO Cognac Cask Finish are below:

  • Nose: Succulent notes of poached pear, summer berries, hints of freshly pressed grapes and citrus zest.
  • Taste: Creamy smoothness with rich chocolate undertones.
  • Finish: Floral and fruit aromas make way for an undeniably bold finish.
