Ireland’s Powerscourt Distillery recently announced it is releasing one of the first distilled whiskeys from County Wicklow in more than a century.
A statement from Powerscourt explained that this “history-making” whiskey was distilled on the Powerscourt Estate in the county from 100% malt.
The Powerscourt Distillery Single Malt is now available from selected retailers across Ireland as well as from the Powerscourt Distillery and Visitor Center, and online. It has a suggested price of €55.
John Cashman, head of new product development for Powerscourt, said, “Our first Fercullen Single Malt release takes authentic inspiration from our unique location. It’s a great honor to be involved in the inaugural release of a whiskey which was completely distilled here in Powerscourt Distillery.”
He said that the whole Powerscourt team is proud of this key milestone in their story. The distillery’s first employee, Senior Distiller Johnathan Graham, joined founding Master Distiller Paul Corbett, to supervise the first distillation in 2018.
“The spirit laid down at Powerscourt Distillery in 2018 is of exceptional quality,” Corbett added. “To have the opportunity to blend these liquids and establish the DNA of Fercullen Single Malt has been an honor. I look forward to blending many more releases of Powerscourt Distillery liquid in the coming years.”
The distillers described this whiskey’s flavor profile as having a nose of toffee, baking spices, vanilla, dessert apples, pears, soft leather, cinnamon, nutmeg, and baked buttered pastry crusts.
On the palate, their notes suggest tastes of vanilla custard, soft oak, salted caramel, and digestives. It’s followed by a warming finish of oak spices, leather, honeyed almonds, and stewed fruits.

Ryan Stapleton, global head of sales, said that following the announcement earlier in 2023 of the appointment of Zamora as their importer in the U.S., “We are delighted to add to our existing portfolio with our signature Fercullen Single Malt. The product will be initially rolled out domestically with our trade partner Barry & Fitzwilliam and in Global Travel Retail with Duty Free Global before being made available in EU and Asian markets.“
This inaugural release will see 6,000 numbered bottles, followed by an additional run of unnumbered bottles.
