Ireland’s Connacht Whiskey Company recently announced their first core release, a 5-year-old single malt Irish whiskey matured in former bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks.
According to their press release, this new expression clocks in at 44.8% ABV and has a suggested price of €64.99 per bottle.
The new whiskey is part of the brand’s core range made at their Ballina-based distillery in County Mayo, Ireland.
Their whiskey was first introduced to the public at the most recent Whiskey Live event in Dublin, along with introductions to the brand’s Head Distiller Ryan Friesen, Master Blender Julia Nourney and Commercial Director Killian O’Sullivan.
O’Sullivan said, “Connacht Single Malt Batch 1 was a runaway success which won numerous awards including a San Francisco Spirits Competition Double Gold, gold from the Irish Whiskey Awards, a rare 95 point rating from the New York Spirits Competition and was judged to be ‘Best in Class’ by the American Distilling Institute – all at just over 4 years old.”
However, O’Sullivan said, they decided they could make this whiskey even more accessible to whiskey enthusiasts, and that’s when the team worked to refine the taste profile and present the whiskey at five years old.
“Given that our home is on the Wild Atlantic Way and our distillery is subject to the microclimate of Ireland’s West Coast, we thought it fitting to trademark the term ‘Spirit of the Atlantic’ and to apply it to our first core whiskey,” he added.

Killian said that Connacht Distillery plans further releases later this year, including the first triple distilled cask finished whiskey from the company, as well as a distillery exclusive.
