Washington’s Woodinville Distillery recently introduced a unique expression, the Woodinville Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Ginja Barrels.
So what is Ginja? A statement from Woodinville explains that Ginjinha (Ginja) is a Portuguese liquor made by infusing sour cherries called Ginja Berries.
To make this finished whiskey, Woodinville fully matures their 95 proof bourbon, then transfers it to freshly-emptied Ginjinha Barrels.
The distiller’s notes describe the finished product as a whiskey that greets you on the nose with blackberry jam. On the palate, there is a honey sweetness at the start, followed by undertones of dark cherry and cardamom. The finish is of cinnamon and clove spice.
This 95 proof Harvest Release became available in the Woodinville Tasting Room in Woodinville, WA, earlier this month, and it’s expected to be available as a distillery-only exclusive for the holiday season.
The Ginja finished whiskey has a suggested price of $69.95 per bottle, and alongside of it a cask strength version of the Harvest Release was being made available. The Cask Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Ginja Barrels clocks in at 107.92 proof, and it sells for $79.95 per bottle. There will only be a limited amount of these.
