Every year, one whiskey maker celebrates a special birthday, that of Old Forester’s original creator, George Garvin Brown.
And Old Forester does so with an annual release of the brand’s most revered expression, Birthday Bourbon.
A statement from Old Forester noted that the release of this limited edition, vintage-dated expression is coming up, as Birthday Bourbon bottles will be available for purchase nationwide at select retailers.
In addition, bottles will be available at Old Forester Distillery in Louisville through a national sweepstakes that runs through Aug. 31st. The sweepstakes will allow consumers nationwide a more equal opportunity to purchase the limited-edition expression.
The distiller’s statement explained that Birthday Bourbon bottles will not be sold at the Old Forester Distillery on Sept. 2nd.
“Every year, Birthday Bourbon is a unique opportunity for lovers of Old Forester to taste a snapshot of the bourbon that was being laid down over a decade ago,” said Old Forester Master Taster Melissa Rift. “This year’s 12-year-old offering is serving up a classic Old Forester profile that has spent that time developing rich caramelized and oaky characteristics.”
They will choose the sweepstakes winners on Sept. 2nd, and bottles will be available for pickup between Sept. 8th through Dec. 23rd.
For the 2023 Birthday Bourbon, a total of 103 barrels were filled, on May 5th, 2011, and placed on the fifth floor of Warehouse 1. The final product clocks in at 96 proof.

On the nose, the Birthday Bourbon has aromas of candied citrus and floral overtones that give way to turbinado sugar and roasted coffee beans. Slight cedar and charred oak round out the aromas. The palate tastes of subtle citrus with notes of dark honey, molasses and charred oak. It finishes with dry toasty oaked caramel with lingering bittersweet tannins.
The whiskey has a suggested retail price of $169.99.
