New Bourbon Distillery To Break Ground On Way To Bardstown

Clermont Distilling Co. plans to set up operations on a large parcel of land on the way to Bardstown, Kentucky.

The greater region around Bardstown, Kentucky is truly a hot spot for lovers of all things bourbon, particularly given the concentration of whiskey distilleries around the area. Now a new operation is looking to set up shop there, with plans being set in motion to locate a distillery right off of I-65 at the Clermont/Bardstown exit. 

The planned Clermont Distilling Co., according to those behind it, aims to take over some 55 acres of land total on both sides of KY 245 leading to Bardstown. Said property will be located right before reaching the Bernhiem Forest, with distillery operations being set on approximately 15 acres of the land. The remaining acreage is being explored for development of tourism amenities, to include accommodations and other attractions.

“As a 5th generation Kentuckian,” said Lee Wilburn, developer behind the project, in a prepared statement, “our family has deep ties to the bourbon industry through various bloodlines. This project brings us great excitement to have our new distillery joining the iconic Kentucky bourbon industry.

“The land chosen for Clermont Distillery had been held by the same family for over 90 years and became available for purchase at the most perfect time.”

It is believed construction on the distillery will begin in spring of 2021, with it being noted that the setup will be “traditionally-designed, energy efficient, with the most up-to-date technology and monitoring features. There is an existing well with natural limestone water on the land that is being evaluated for distilling use.

“There will be a state of the art tasting room and a gift shop, a Rick House housing 24,000 bourbon barrels, and a Grain House.”

“We are looking to purchase locally through Vendome Copper & Brass Works,” added Wilburn, “with plans to have a 36-inch continuous still. The 36-inch column still will support operations as we get started but also provides scalability to produce up to 50,000 barrels per year to support ‘house’ brands, established brands we bring in house and contract distilling.”
