Four Gate Introduces New Expressions In Its Majestic Wood Series

Four Gate Whiskey Company recently announced the latest expressions in its Majestic Wood series, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey finished in oak casks from Japan and Brazil.

A statement from the Kentucky whiskey maker notes that the Majestic Wood series will launch with two initial offerings, both starting with a base whiskey of seven-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon.

The first of the two is then finished in Japanese Mizunara Oak casks, while the second is finished in Brazilian Amburana Oak casks.

Japanese Mizunara Oak grows in smaller, twisted trunks that produce fewer straight staves, rendering the wood rare and expensive for coopering. In addition, its extremely high moisture content means the staves that are produced require considerably longer drying time before they can be used in a barrel.

This has led Mizunara casks to be highly coveted in the industry, both rare and expensive. But whiskey makers find the oak lends a sweet sandalwood note to the underlying whiskey creating something unique and flavorful.

Four Gate’s second release features barrels made from Brazilian Amburana Oak.

The Amburana is a tree native to Brazil, known for making a rum-like spirit called cachaça. The wood itself adds notes of vanilla, baking spices like cloves and cinnamon along with sweet ginger notes to whiskey aged in a barrel crafted from the tree, Four Gate’s distillers note.

The two new expressions are limited in release, only 1,673 bottles of Japanese Mizunara Oak produced at 117.4 proof and 2,070 bottles of the Brazilian Amburana Oak were made clocking in at 115.1 proof.

The bottles have a suggested retail price of $249.

“This won’t be the last of the Majestic Wood Series,” said Four Gate Chief Barrel Officer Bob D’Antoni, in a prepared statement. “There will be more to come.”

Both new expressions will be available where Four Gate Whiskey is distributed, including KY, TN, IN, LA, TX, GA, FL,CA, CO, AZ, and IL as well as online through Seelbachs.com, Bourbonoutfitter.com, and caskers.com.
