Bourbon Features In New Ponyboy Slings Canned Cocktails

A new canned cocktail debuts this summer, the brainchild of Kentucky bartenders and newlyweds Mike and Janell Bass.

They’re calling it Ponyboy Slings, and the upstart drinks brand described it as a spritz-style, bourbon-based cocktail that leans into the trend of lower ABV cocktails.

A statement from the canned cocktail makers notes that Ponyboy Slings are made with ingredients such as dry vermouth, sherry, bitters, along with real fruit juice. The drinks clock in at 7% ABV, and are fully carbonated.

Mike and Janell have more than 20 years under their belts as bartenders, and they explained that the “1970s retro vibe of the brand will remind people that it should be fun, relaxed, and something you get to share with your friends.” Their motto? Chill it. Pop it. Giddy up!

The newlyweds, who fell in love during lockdown, got engaged in Paris, and threw a surprise wedding all within a year … and they developed these recipes from their Louisville, Kentucky kitchen.

They built the Bourbon Pop Star (strawberry and basil), My Cherry Amour (sour cherry and lemon), and Derby Cream Soda (bourbon cream soda) from info they gathered from event-bartending and creating cocktails for large bourbon brands. “Who knew people would love carbonated bourbon cocktails?,” they said in their prepared statement.

Ponyboy Slings launches in Louisville first, and will be available in select bars and liquor stores later in July.
