Irish cream is a low alcohol liqueur commonly used in mixed cocktails such as Irish coffee or, if you’re enjoying a nice summer camping trip, an early morning with some nice black French press. Now, sipping cream isn’t just an Irish output.

Nashville, Tennessee based distillery Pennington Distilling Co. has released Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream, America’s answer to Irish cream—though, unfortunately, it’s not the better answer.
Pennington Distilling Co. is run by husband-and-wife team Jeff and Jenny Pennington, and they have enjoyed a great deal of success from the many expressions produced from the distillery. Recently, Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream won a bronze medal at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition Awards, an exciting moment in an otherwise dreary year.
Of the win, the Jeff and Jenny Pennington stated, “Winning these awards is a huge honor for each of our brands. Our Davidson Reserve Whiskies, Pickers and Walton’s Vodkas and Whisper Creek spirits continue to resonate with our target demographics of whiskey lovers, vodka enthusiasts and our Tennessee sipping cream fan club. We are very proud of our entire team who have worked hard to make Pennington Distilling Company and Nashville known in the liquor business on a national stage.”
Made with 100% aged Tennessee whiskey, real dairy, and over 30 natural flavors, this American Cream Liqueur has a lot going on. It has apparently appealed to some audiences, but my tasting today has me wondering what they are experiencing that I’m not. Utilizing the distinct flavor profile of Tennessee Whiskey would ideally culminate in a nice, boozy tasting cream. But Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream starts off cloying and finishes with a bitter note. It leaves much to be desired, but may still be a nice addition to a hot drink on a cold day.
Tasting Notes: Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream
Vital Notes: Made with 100% Tennessee Whiskey and over 30 all-natural flavors. 20% ABV (40 Proof). $20/750mL.
Appearance: Creamy white
Nose: The overwhelming scent of cherry cough syrup.
Palate: While there is the faintest note of that Tennessee whiskey, I couldn’t get past the taste of cherry cough syrup. Even though there are apparently all-natural flavors in this sipping cream, it tastes more like a synthetic cherry addition. While trying to discern any other aspects of the flavor profile, I did get a hint of vanilla and butterscotch.
