Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey recently unveiled its latest distillery experimental expression, Stranahan’s Red Wine Cask.
A statement from Stranahan’s explains that this whiskey is designed to continue innovating the American single malt category, and it’s one of few distillery experimental expressions they release each year. Each having unique cask finishing techniques.
The Red Wine Cask is an American single malt crafted from a marriage of seven-year-old whiskeys, with a minimum of three years spent in casks that previously held Bordeaux and Pinot Noir wine.
Stranahan’s Red Wine Cask is distilled from 100% malted barley and made in small batches at Stranahan’s Colorado distillery. It initially matures four years in virgin American oak barrels with a #3 char.
After the initial maturation, the whiskey is then transferred into Bordeaux and Pinot Noir casks, then finished three more years. The single malt is then cut to proof with Rocky Mountain water from Eldorado Springs.
The distiller’s notes show that on the nose, the Red Wine Cask has aromas of tarragon, lemon Fresca, banana bread, and vanilla wafer. On the palate, it tastes of white peach juice, peach cobbler, and orange creamsicle. The finish is fluffy like marshmallow, before a late linger of red wine dryness.
Stranahan’s Red Wine Cask clocks in at 90 proof, 45% ABV. It has a suggested retail price of $69.99 for a 750ml bottle.
