Still Austin Whiskey Debuts “The Artist” Made From Texas Rye Grains

The Still Austin Whiskey Co. recently launched a 100-percent straight rye whiskey made from Texas grains, called “The Artist.”

Two years ago, Still Austin debuted its flagship straight bourbon, known as “The Musician.” That expression took home double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The Artist is a new companion expression, bringing rye into the mix for Still Austin.

A statement from the distiller notes that The Artist is aged at least two years and bottled at 99.6 proof (49.8% ABV).

The distiller’s notes explain that the new rye whiskey on the nose hints of honey, cherries, fig, clove and coffee. The palate is that of spicy chocolate, apricot, sandalwood, ginger and caramel. And the finish lingers with hints of cinnamon, molasses, nutmeg and orange zest.

“Our team put a lot of hard work and love into this release,” said Brandon Joldersma, chief operating officer for Still Austin Whiskey Co. “We could not be prouder to bring another expression to life that represents the spirit of our city.”

The bottle features artwork on the label by artist and native Texan Marc Burckhardt. The Artist’s title is the latest in the series of “archetypical” Austinites (such as The Musician, The Naturalist). It’s a way for the distiller to pay homage to their home Texas turf.

Still Austin was founded in 2015, and focuses on a grain-to-glass concept, using local resources and sustainable practices. The team hand-makes each batch from scratch, and manages the milling, mashing, fermenting, distilling, barreling and bottling in-house.

The Still Austin distilling team is led by Head Distiller John Schrepel, Master Blender Nancy Fraley and veteran Master Distiller Mike Delevante. The distillery features a 42-foot custom-made column, “Nancy,” and a sister copper-pot still, “The Queen.”

The Artist Straight Rye Whiskey is now available at the Still Austin distillery tasting room, and has a suggested retail price of $50. It’s also available across the state of Texas, and online at Reserve Bar.
