American By Nino Marchetti / November 13, 2014 Earlier this year I had the privilege of being one of the first to bring you word of some new limited edition whiskies being released from cult Texas whiskey distillery favorite Balcones Distilling. It looks like those Texans are now at it again, getting ready for another launch of a special new single malt that has seen some time in French oak.Known as Balcones FR.OAK, this new single malt whiskey will be the first permanent line extension of the distillery’s well regarded “1” Texas Single Malt bottling. From what I’ve been told the spirit, before being bottled at a cask strength of 60% ABV, spent an average of 9 months in American oak, and then casks of this were blended into French oak and allowed to rest there for an additional 13 months, bringing the total aging time to at least 22 months. As it stands right now an initial batch of 200 or so bottles will be made available through the distillery sometime soon, with the rest going to a distributor. More will also likely be made down the line. This looks to be another solid release from the folks over at Balcones – as more details on it emerge I’ll try and update this post with that information.
