Tasting Notes:

About:
A blend of Straight Rye Whiskeys aged five to eight years and finished in Amburana and Sherry Casks.
Appearance:
Marigold
Nose:
Cinnamon toast crunch cereal
Palate:
Cinnamon, overwhelmingly cinnamon, with a slight hint of dried strawberries.
Finish:
The cinnamon flavor present on the nose and palate lingers throughout for a light finish.
Comments:
Amburana is a tricky wood to master, and while the use of Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks most likely imparted the slight hint of dried fruit it was not enough to overcome the overwhelming cinnamon flavors from the Amburana oak. The whisky is certainly fine enough, but it tastes more like I\’ve poured cinnamon toast crunch and special K with strawberries into a bowl and somehow turned it into a rye. The traditional rye spice is gone, completely overtaken by the Amburana. All in all it is an easy sipper, but definitely one you need to be in the mood for.

How Should You Drink True Story Finished Rye?

As True Story Finished Rye whiskey has such a powerful and driving note of cinnamon, if you like that smell and flavor then you should just have neat pours of this, or over ice, whatever you prefer. However, as a way to perhaps balance out the flavor of cinnamon in this liquid, or enhance other flavors from other spirits, you could go all out and make a Sazerac cocktail. We’re getting to that colder time of year now and those hits of cinnamon, lemon, absinthe, and bitters could be quite interesting. There’s a basic recipe for one below.

Pour 1/4oz of absinthe into your serving glass of choice and wash it around the glass. If you have an atomiser then just use one spray into the glass. Decant the absinthe and chill your glass down with ice.

In a mixing jug combine 2oz of this rye with a few dashes of Peychaud’s bitters, and a 1/2-3/4oz of sugar syrup. Fill the jug with ice and stir down until diluted to the point you like.

Decant the ice from your chilled serving glass and strain your cocktail into it, garnish with a fresh twist of lemon and there you go!

Will The Cinnamon Note Die Down?

Possibly, yes. Rye as a drink can throw out some interesting changes as the bottle begins to open up. But as stated above, the use of Amburana casks is really driving this wave of cinnamon. Luckily, if you’re a fan of that flavor then it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Even if you don’t mind cinnamon as a smell and taste, this thing could be very interesting in cocktails, even seasonal Nog-style serves.

Is True Story Finished Rye Comparable To Other Rye Whiskeys?

The use of Amburana wood is becoming a little more commonplace, for sure. But it’s still a rare thing to see in general. The use of sherry casks in the finishing process is much more familiar to a majority of us whisky drinkers, but I think you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything too comparable to it on the market currently.
