Scotch Whisky Review: Jura 16 Year Old Perspective No. 1

Balancing orchard fruits, coastal salinity, and toffee sweetness Jura’s 16 Year Old Perspective No. 1 is an impressive start to the Perspectives series.

Tasting Notes:

About:
The first limited-edition release from Jura’s ‘The Perspective’ series designed to showcase and amplify the island distillery’s fruity and balanced house style. Beginning with a fresh perspective on a classic Jura expression, Jura’s Perspective No. 1 is the spiritual successor to the renowned Diurach’s Own 16 Year Old expression discontinued in 2018. Matured for 16 years, Perspective No.1 is first aged in American White Oak bourbon barrels and finished in ex-Oloroso sherry casks for up to 4 years. Bottled at 46.5% ABV.
Appearance:
Rich Bronze
Nose:
Opens with a coastal note of sea salt, which gives way to fruity notes of apple, peach, and plum alongside orange citrus peel. Balanced by roasted walnut, and toffee sweetness.
Palate:
The coastal flavours open, salty brine with a slight oily mouthfeel. After this dissipates, orchard fruits, juicy red apples, pears, and plums balanced by toffee sweetness reminiscent of toffee apples. A fizzy citrus sweet note, reminds me of traditional lemon sherbet sweets. In the background, roasted nuts and a hint of chocolate.
Finish:
Medium-long, warming finish with toffee lingering. Slightly drying oak, fizzy citrus sweetness and pepper.
Comments:
Balancing orchard fruits, coastal salinity, and toffee sweetness Jura’s 16 Year Old Perspective No. 1 is an impressive start to the Perspectives series. With some pleasant aromas and flavours Perspective No. 1 is an easy drinking whisky, bottled with a 16-year age statement at natural colour and non-chill filtered – something which could be expanded across Jura’s core range. Whilst I’d have liked to see a little more complexity, the Jura Perspective No. 1 is an enjoyable whisky at an affordable price.

For those wondering how Perspective No. 1 compares with the original Diurach’s Own 16 Year Old expression, I recently sampled Perspective No. 1 with my local tasting group and the general opinion was the new edition is slightly sweeter than Diurach’s Own – possibly the result of a longer ex-sherry cask finish.
