Tasting Notes

About:

A single malt whisky from New Zealand’s Thomson distillery, the Manuka Smoke expression is distilled from local barley which has been smoked with native Manuka wood. Bottled at 46% ABV.
Appearance:
Pale Gold
Nose:
Aromas of smouldering beach bonfire embers accompanied by a touch of salty coastal air. Spicy notes of cinnamon and a little clove follow.
Palate:
Earthy smoke opens on the palate, followed by some minerality which gives way to a warming mix of nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon spice. There are also notes of malty barley and cereal grains, alongside a touch of marshmallow.
Finish:
Medium length, Manuka wood comes to the fore with a sweet ‘honey smoke’ note. Becomes quite peppery towards the close.
Comments:
The core single malt expression from New Zealand’s Thomson distillery, Manuka Smoke’s use of native Manuka wood to smoke the barley results in an intriguing sweet-smoky combo which leads on the finish. I enjoyed the earthy spice notes, and how these layered well with the Manuka wood influence. The smoky aspect of the Manuka Smoke expression was not overpowering, rather gentle and refined resulting in an accessible whisky. An ideal expression to begin exploring the Thomson range and Kiwi whisky.
