Tasting Notes

About:

A 13-Year-Old single malt from the Highland’s Glen Ord distillery, bottled by the Dornoch distillery based independent bottler Thompson Bros. Distilled on the 18th July 2012, this whisky was matured for 13-years in a single decharred, recharred hogshead cask before being bottled in April 2026. Only 312 bottles were produced, at natural colour and non-chill filtered, bottled at 54.7% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Gold
Nose:
Fresh aromas opening with floral elderflower and cut grass, shifting to lemon and lime citrus alongside a touch of gooseberry. There is also a slight minerality and notes of beeswax candles.
Palate:
Fresh and crisp on the palate, opening with bright green apples, lemon and lime citrus and gooseberries. At the mid-point beeswax leads becoming quite mouthcoating, before shifting to malted barley and warming oak accompanied by flashes of salt and ginger.
Finish:
A medium-long finish, with slight tart acidity of green apples, limes and gooseberries balanced by sharp ginger snaps and charred oak.
Comments:
I always feel quite nostalgic when I sample a Glen Ord bottling, as the Glen Ord 12-Year-Old square bottle from the early 2000’s was one of the bottlings to get me into whisky, before the distillery’s releases were bottled as part of the Singleton brand. In this Thompson Bros Glen Ord 13-Year-Old, I really enjoyed the balance between the slightly tart citrus and green fruits and sharp savoury ginger and charred oak spice. A fresh, summery Glen Ord – I’m tempted to another bottle!
