Raer Oloroso Blended Scotch Whisky Review

Is Jackton's steep price jump for their oloroso sherry cask whisky worth it? This burnished copper dram promises rich fudge and juicy raisins, but delivers mixed results.

Tasting Notes

About:

Released as part of a sherried trio from Jackton Distillery, this bottle has been influenced by being in Jerez first-fill oloroso sherry casks. A 40% ABV unpeated blended Scotch made from grain and malt whisky.
Appearance:
A burnished copper colour in a great looking bottle.
Nose:
The nose opens with a hit of bitter orange zest with a slightly sharp edge before mellowing into sweet notes of banana and walnut loaf. There is a rich fudgy aroma which lingers beneath the more fruity and nutty notes.
Palate:
Juicy raisin sweetness comes through first with more light pastry notes and a touch of chili-dark chocolate. There is a subtle almond and marzipan flavour which gives a soft richness to the silky texture. Slightly burnt strawberry jam tarts linger toward the end but is an approachable and easy drinking whisky.
Finish:
A short to medium length finish where the oloroso influence provides a dry sweet spice to finish.
Comments:
Overall this is good step up from their original blended release with the oloroso providing greater depth though I feel the quite steep price increase is hard to justify between this and others in the range.
